Retinol vs. Bakuchiol: The Ultimate Fearless Guide

How many times have you heard retinol referred to as the "holy grail" of anti-aging... and then read that it irritates, that you can't use it in summer, that pregnant women can't use it, that you have to start with low doses? Retinol is effective, yes. But it's not for everyone. And this is where Bakuchiol comes in.

At Ryōho Cosmetics, we have been working with Bakuchiol as a star ingredient in our facial line for some time, and the question we get asked most often is always the same: is it as good as retinol, or is it just green marketing? Today we're answering that with data.

What is retinol and why is it so famous?

Retinol is a derivative of vitamin A, one of the most studied ingredients in cosmetic dermatology. Its mechanism of action is clear: it accelerates cell renewal, stimulates collagen production, and reduces the appearance of wrinkles, blemishes, and enlarged pores.

Its strengths:

  • Decades of scientific evidence supporting its efficacy
  • Visible results in texture, tone, and firmness
  • Wide range of concentrations (0.025% to 1%+)

Its limitations:

  • Can cause irritation, flaking, and redness, especially at the beginning
  • Photosensitizing: increases sun sensitivity
  • Contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Incompatible with very sensitive skin or active rosacea
  • Requires an adaptation period of several weeks

What is Bakuchiol and where does it come from?

Bakuchiol is extracted from the seeds and leaves of the Psoralea corylifolia plant, used for centuries in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine. It is not a retinoid, but it acts on the same cellular receptors as retinol, allowing it to mimic its effects without sharing its drawbacks.

A study published in the British Journal of Dermatology (2018) directly compared both ingredients over 12 weeks and concluded that Bakuchiol was comparable to retinol in reducing wrinkles and pigmentation, with significantly fewer side effects.

Its strengths:

  • 100% plant-based origin and compatible with vegan formulations
  • Non-photosensitizing: can be used morning and night
  • Suitable for sensitive, reactive, and rosacea-prone skin
  • Compatible with pregnancy (always consult your doctor)
  • No aggressive adaptation period

Its limitations:

  • Fewer long-term studies than retinol
  • Results may be more gradual on very mature skin
  • Not all formulations have the effective concentration (look for ≥0.5%)

Can they be used together?

Yes, and in fact, some advanced formulations combine them to boost results. However, if your skin is sensitive, always start with just one and observe the response. At Ryōho, we choose Bakuchiol as our main ingredient precisely because it allows for a no-compromise experience: real efficacy, without barriers to use.
